Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MICI) Introduces Online Platform for Visa Applications

Panama City, August 1, 2023 — The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MICI) has announced a significant enhancement to the visa application process for foreign nationals, introducing an electronic platform set to revolutionize procedures under the Multinational Companies (SEM) and Companies Providing Manufacturing Related Services (EMMA) categories. The new system, effective September 15, 2023, aims to simplify and expedite the application and renewal process.

Key features of the electronic platform include:

Online Filing of Visa Applications: Foreign nationals, through their authorized attorneys, will be required to file initial and renewal visa applications via the newly introduced electronic platform. This move is expected to streamline several steps in the application process.

Direct Submission to SEM Office:

Online applications will be submitted directly to the SEM Office within the MICI. This eliminates the current practice of initial in-person submissions, followed by internal transfers to the SEM Office, thereby reducing processing time.

Instant SEM Certification Issuance:

Upon authorization of the online application, the SEM office will issue the SEM Certification directly to attorneys online. This will enable them to submit the visa application and original supporting documentation in person without the delays associated with traditional processes.

Appointment Scheduling for Immigration Services:

Attorneys will have the option to use the platform for scheduling appointments related to immigration services. This feature is designed to simplify and streamline the overall process.   MICI has also expressed plans to expand the online platform to cover additional services, including SEM and EMMA license applications, license updates, and submission of annual company reports. However, stakeholders are advised that processing times may experience delays during the initial stages of the system’s implementation.   Employers and foreign nationals are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the new online platform and stay informed about any updates or additional services that may be introduced in the future.
