Ministry of Labor in Panama Implements Online System for Work Permit Applications

Panama City, October 10, 2023 — The Ministry of Labor in Panama has taken a significant step towards modernizing its processes by introducing a new online system for work permit applications. As of [effective date], foreign nationals are required to register through the Ministry’s website, marking a shift away from the traditional in-person registration process.

Key features of the new online system include:

Virtual Registration Process:

The Ministry has replaced the in-person registration process with a user-friendly online system. Foreign nationals must register through the Ministry’s website, eliminating the need for a physical appearance.

Photograph and Work Permit Category Designation:

During the online registration, foreign nationals are prompted to take a photograph using the system’s webcam. Additionally, applicants must designate the specific work permit category they are applying for, along with providing other necessary personal information.

Instant Registration Confirmation:

Upon submission of the online registration, the Ministry will issue an instant registration confirmation in PDF format. This confirmation document is a prerequisite for including with the subsequent work permit application.

Mandatory Registration Requirement:

All foreign nationals are now required to register with the Ministry of Labor through the online system before applying for their initial work permit, regardless of the chosen category.

Renewal Process Updates:

It is anticipated that foreign nationals who previously registered with the Ministry in person will be required to re-register online when renewing their work permits.

Electronic Platform for Work Permit Applications:

The Ministry has also launched an electronic platform for work permit applications. Initially, this system is available for category 5 work permit applicants (humanitarian/refugee work permits), with plans to roll out additional application types in phases later this year.

The Ministry’s move to digitize these processes is aimed at improving efficiency, accessibility, and overall user experience for foreign nationals seeking work permits in Panama.
