Panama Announces Stricter Entry Measures Effective

Panama City, June 15, 2023 — In an effort to enhance border control and regulate irregular immigration, the National Immigration Service of Panama is set to implement new entry measures starting October 2, 2023. These measures aim to ensure the security and well-being of the nation by introducing stricter requirements for certain foreign nationals entering the country.

Key aspects of the new entry measures include:

Increased Discretionary Powers for Immigration Officials: Immigration officials at ports of entry will now have higher discretionary powers to request proof of sufficient funds from certain foreign nationals entering Panama. Instead of the standard legal minimum of USD 500, travelers may be required to show proof of at least USD 1,000 per person to cover their stay.

Adjustment in Periods of Stay:

The grant periods of stay for certain foreign nationals will be adjusted based on the traveler’s profile. While the usual period of stay is up to 90 days, some individuals may now be granted stays of up to 15 days, reflecting a more tailored approach to entry permissions.

Increased Deportations and Expulsions: The National Immigration Service has announced a proactive approach to addressing irregular immigration with criminal records.

There will be an increase in deportations and expulsions of foreign nationals found in Panama under irregular status and with criminal records.    These measures are part of the government’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of its immigration system and safeguarding national interests. The changes are expected to contribute to a more efficient and secure entry process while addressing potential concerns related to irregular immigration.  As the implementation date approaches, travelers and relevant stakeholders are advised to stay informed about the latest updates and adhere to the new entry requirements.
